Pyongyang, August 23, 2025 — A new report has revealed that North Korea has quietly completed construction of a secret missile base near its northern border with China, sparking global concerns over the country’s expanding nuclear ambitions.
The site, known as the Sinpung-dong Missile Operating Base, is believed to house six to nine intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Analysts from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) say the base could accommodate thousands of troops and serve as a key part of North Korea’s growing “hidden” nuclear infrastructure.
Satellite imagery shows reinforced shelters, underground tunnels, and fortified launch areas designed to protect missiles from preemptive strikes. Experts warn that the base’s remote location makes it difficult to monitor and potentially places U.S. territories and allies at greater risk.
“This site highlights how Pyongyang is continuing to invest in survivable and dispersed missile facilities, making its nuclear arsenal harder to track and neutralize,” CSIS researchers noted in their report.
North Korea is currently estimated to possess around 50 nuclear warheads, with enough fissile material for up to 40 more. U.S. and South Korean officials fear that the expansion of such bases signals Pyongyang’s determination to cement itself as a permanent nuclear power.
Leader Kim Jong Un has repeatedly declared that North Korea will never give up its nuclear weapons. This latest missile base appears to be part of that long-term strategy.
While diplomatic talks with the United States remain frozen, Pyongyang continues to expand its arsenal and test new weapons. Just last week, North Korea tested new anti-air missiles, further showing its military progress.
The discovery of the Sinpung-dong base raises fresh security concerns for South Korea, Japan, and the United States. Military experts warn that the site’s remote location near the Chinese border makes it more difficult to monitor, giving North Korea a stronger advantage.
The secret construction of the Sinpung-dong missile base proves that North Korea is determined to expand its nuclear program. With more hidden sites likely undiscovered, the world faces a rising threat that could destabilize global security.
